Spotlight on LED Light Therapy

Originally developed by NASA to help heal wounds in space, LED light therapy has since been adapted for medical and cosmetic skincare treatments.  From acne and fine lines to inflammation and dullness, LED light therapy promises visible skin improvements with no downtime. From the very first sessions, whatever the age of the person, the visible effects of reversing the signs of aging are not only observable but also measurable.

LED Light Therapy for Skin: Benefits, Science, and What to Expect

Originally developed by NASA to help heal wounds in space, LED light therapy has since been adapted for medical and cosmetic skincare treatments.  From acne and fine lines to inflammation and dullness, LED light therapy promises visible skin improvements with no downtime. From the very first sessions, whatever the age of the person, the visible effects of reversing the signs of aging are not only observable but also measurable.

What Is LED Light Therapy?

LED (light-emitting diode) light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin at different depths. Unlike UV rays, LED lights do not damage the skin or cause burns. Instead, they stimulate cellular processes that support skin repair, collagen production, and reduced inflammation.

How LED Light Affects the Skin

Different colors of LED light correspond to different wavelengths, and each targets specific skin concerns:

  • Red light (around 630–660 nm):
Penetrates deeply into the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production. It’s commonly used for anti-aging, reducing fine lines, improving firmness, and enhancing overall skin texture.

  • Blue light (around 415 nm):
Targets acne-causing bacteria on the skin’s surface. Blue light is effective for treating mild to moderate acne and reducing breakouts without harsh chemicals.

  • Near-infrared light (around 800–880 nm):
Reaches deeper layers of the skin to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation. It’s often used alongside red light for enhanced results.

  • Amber or yellow light:
Helps calm redness, reduce swelling, and improve skin tone, making it beneficial for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.

Benefits of LED Light Therapy

LED light therapy offers a wide range of skin benefits, especially when used consistently:

•       Reduces fine lines and wrinkles

•       Improves skin firmness and elasticity

•       Clears acne and reduces future breakouts

•       Calms inflammation and redness

•       Speeds up skin healing and recovery

•       Enhances overall radiance and tone

Because its non-invasive, LED therapy is suitable for most skin types and can be combined with other treatments like facials, microneedling, or chemical peels.

What to Expect from Treatment

A typical LED session lasts 10–30 minutes. The treatment is painless—you’ll simply relax under the lights. Most people need multiple sessions over several weeks to see results; consistency is key. Like exercise for your skin, the benefits build over time.

THE SCIENCE: The proof is in the science and backed by studies

Study Method: 630nm red light led 2xweek for 12 mins each time

Results after 1 month:

·       15.6% decrease in the depth of crow's feet wrinkle

·       Decrease of 5.4% of the clinical score of slackening of the oval of the face and 13.6% of the R0 value translating a firming effect

·       26.4% increase in dermal density

·       6.8% decrease in cheek roughness and 28.5% decrease in pore diameter, indicating a smoothing effect

·       34.9% decrease in the quantity of sebum (oil)

Additional benefits after 2 months:

·       12.5% in skin elasticity

·       32.7% in skin tone homogeneity

Additional benefits after 3 months:

•       16.7% decrease in the sagging of the face

•       31.3% decrease in the R0 value, indicating an increase in skin firmness

•       62.1% increase in dermal density

•       28.1% decrease in pore diameter

•       62.6% decrease in the amount of sebum

ADDITIONAL BENEFIT!
Studies on red LED light therapy show amazing benefits for people with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune hypothyroidism). Benefits like:

  • Reduced Medication Needs

  • Lowered Thyroid Antibodies

  • Improved Tissue Health of Thyroid Gland

  • Symptom Relief: reduced fatigue, improved mood, better skin health, and weight management support

How it works:

  • Increased Cellular Energy (ATP): The light stimulates mitochondria to produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP), providing the cells with more energy to function and repair.

  • Reduced Inflammation: RLT exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by modulating immune responses and lowering levels of inflammatory markers.

  • Enhanced Blood Flow: It promotes the release of nitric oxide, which helps dilate blood vessels, improving circulation and nutrient delivery to the thyroid tissue.

How to do it:

  • Frequency: 2 to 3 times per week for at least 3 months.

  • Duration: 10 to 20 minutes per session.

  • Wavelengths: Devices typically use red (around 630-660 nm) and near-infrared (around 810-850 nm) wavelengths
