How to choose the right set for your skin.
You may start out with one skin type and as you age and go through life’s challenges, it can change. Moving to a different environment or travelling a lot will alter your skin’s needs, as will hormonal events like puberty, pregnancy, menopause and just aging in general. Many illnesses can also change your skin’s needs by making it more sensitive, causing acne or altering your skin’s microbiome. To help you decide where to start, below I have listed the category explanations to help you decide what categories your skin falls into.
***Make note of the “Top” and “Side” category letter, this will help you find your skincare routine.

TOP CATEGORY
Normal Skin (N)
Normal skin is skin that is not too dry, not too oily and doesn’t react strongly (turn red and flakey) with most skincare products. This type of skin has been easy to take care of without many obstacles like acne or sensitivities.
Oily Skin (O)
Oily skin has a few tell-tail signs: large pores and an oily film on top of the skin shortly after washing it that lasts all day. Many oily skin types are prone to acne and usually age with less wrinkles. Most adults over the age of 20 will not have oily skin and very few adults over the age of 35 will have this skin type.
False Oily Skin: Some people with dry skin, will think they have oily skin because of an oily film, when they are actually very dry. The body tries to “fix” dry skin by pumping out oil. If you have a rough texture to your skin and have blackheads and clogged pores, you’re most likely dry, with oil on top. Choose category BD: Blackheads-Dry
Dry Skin (D)
Dry Skin is very common with adults over the age of 35 and people of African American decent, as they naturally have more water loss through their skin (TEWL: trans epidermal water loss). Dry skin can be flakey and can cause pores to become clogged with dead skin, causing blackheads and even acne. It can have a rough skin texture and pores look smaller.
Sensitive Skin (S)
Sensitive skin is usually known by the person that has it. They tend to turn pink or red (flush) easily and react poorly to many topical products, fragrance and exfoliants. Sensitive skin types will usually try a new product, have a reaction and give up trying because they seemingly react to “everything”. There is hope! I promise.

Acne (A)
Acne prone skin is all skin that breaks out, either in small pimples or cysts, sensitive or not and of all ages: babies to geriatric adults.
Aging (G)
Skin can show signs of aging in as early as your 20s! You know the signs: wrinkles, blotchy skin, dull-looking skin, thinning skin and age spots and other hyperpigmentation.
Rosacea (R)
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that has become very common. It presents as redness in the face that is triggered by spicey diets, alcohol, preservatives and the climate we live in. Skin is very sensitive and can erupt in a rash or acne-like bumps easily. Using the proper products for this skin type is crucial.
Hyperpigmentation (H)
Hyperpigmentaion is a darkening of the skin from injury, UV damage, medications and sometimes though friction to the skin. This skin type includes aging skin if the main focus is age-spots. Hyperpigmentation can occur from acne in the form of scarring, scars from laser treatments, melasma, sun damage and sometimes people get hyperpigmentation from waxing or picking their skin.
Blackheads (B)
Blackheads are clogged pores, pure and simple. They tend to arise in skin that is dry, as the dry skin wedges itself into the pore, widening it with debris. Blackheads also can occur in people that have had many extractions that have left the pore damaged. Squeezing the pores over and over can cause the pore to perpetually look “open” once the pore walls have been damaged. Stop picking and squeezing your face.
